It is written for the NON-scientist by Dr Michael Wosnick, a recently retired senior cancer research executive, who has over 20 years of experience in the field and who has a penchant for cancer research but also a demonstrated talent for explaining technical and complex science in a way that anyone can understand and appreciate.

Join the Ontario Health Study

If you live in Ontario (Canada) then I encourage you to be an active research participant (and it's easy to do!) and be part of the Ontario Health Study (OHS). The OHS website is here.

Not limited to cancer, but to all chronic diseases, the Ontario Health Study is a huge research undertaking that takes community involvement to the limit. You can help!

In their own words:

The Ontario Health Study is an ongoing research study investigating risk factors that cause diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, asthma and Alzheimer’s. If you live in Ontario and are 18 or older, you can take part in the OHS by filling out health-related questionnaires online. Researchers will use this health information to study how our lifestyle, environment and family history affect our health over time and to develop strategies for the prevention, early detection and treatment of diseases.

Name: Dr. Michael A. Wosnick

As the first VP, Research of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and Scientific Director of the CCS Research Institute, I had oversight of all of the Society’s research programs across the country: a cancer research portfolio of between $40 and $50 Million annually. Prior to these appointments I served the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) in two successive capacities – as Executive Director for 7 years, and prior to that as Director of Research Programs for more than 10 years. In total, I have almost 35 years of experience encompassing the academic, biotechnology and not-for-profit sectors. Prior to the NCIC, I worked at Allelix Biopharmaceuticals Inc. in Toronto in various senior research capacities, and was a Research Scientist and Group Leader at Toronto's Connaught Research Institute. I hold a B.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto (1974), and a Ph.D. degree in molecular biology from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario (1978). I did further training as a Post-Doctoral Fellow of the Medical Research Council of Canada, working in the fields of molecular biology and gene expression at the University of Calgary Medical School (1978 through 1981).
